Telegraf Controller release notes
v1.2.0

Before you upgrade
Audit logging changes
Audit logging stops until you configure a signing key
Starting in v1.2.0, Telegraf Controller signs each audit entry with a
key that you configure, and audit logging stays disabled until a key is
set. Installations that run with AUDIT_ENABLED=true stop writing audit
entries after the upgrade until you set AUDIT_HMAC_KEY,
AUDIT_HMAC_KEY_FILE, or --audit-hmac-key-file. Existing audit files
remain readable.
See Enable audit logging.
Reading the audit log requires the new audit:read permission.
Administrator API tokens created before v1.2.0 do not include it.
Create a new token to read the audit log with a token.
Owner tokens with full access are unaffected.
Duplicate configuration and group names are renamed
Configuration and configuration group names are now unique.
On the first start after the upgrade, Telegraf Controller renames existing
duplicates: the oldest keeps its name and later ones get (2), (3),
and so on.
Agents reference configurations by ID or alias, so renamed configurations
keep serving the same agents.
See Create a configuration.
API token access changes
Some API tokens lose access they had before. A request authenticated with an API token now manages only its own user’s tokens and cannot reassign tokens, and account self-service and ownership transfer routes accept only a signed-in session. Review scripts that use API tokens for these operations. The affected endpoints are listed under API changes.
API changes
GET /api/heartbeat/agent/:agentId/latest-heartbeatandGET /api/heartbeat/agent/:agentId/logsmoved toGET /api/agents/:id/heartbeat/latestandGET /api/agents/:id/heartbeat/logs. They identify the agent by its Telegraf Controlleridand requireagents:read. See Retrieve heartbeat data with the API.GET /api/heartbeat/agent-status-checkis nowPOST /api/agents/status-checkand requiresagents:write.PATCH /api/users/me,PATCH /api/users/me/password, and the/api/users/transfer-ownerroutes return403to API tokens. See Session-only endpoints.- Token management over an API token is limited to the token owner’s own tokens, and reassignment requires an Owner or Administrator session. See Token visibility.
GET /api/password-resetsno longer returns the resetcode.- Reporting rule thresholds must be whole seconds from
1to2147483647. Other values return400.
Features
- Add security advisories (Telegraf Enterprise): Telegraf Controller downloads the signed InfluxData advisory feed, or imports it offline, matches advisories to the Telegraf version each agent reports, and shows affected agents on the Security page, the Agents page, and agent detail pages. It also checks its own version against Controller advisories and notifies you when new advisories arrive.
- Add pre-shared tokens: supply your own token value when creating a token so one credential can be installed on several Telegraf Controller instances. Every token now records its source (system-generated, user-provided, or env/flag-provided). Operators can disable pre-shared tokens at startup.
- Redesign the Agents page: a fleet status bar with Fleet Health, Telegraf Versions, and Last Reported summaries, removable filter chips, a Telegraf Version column, and compact and detailed row layouts. Search now matches the agent’s ID, hostname, IP address, or Telegraf version, with regular expression and match-case toggles.
- Redesign the agent detail page around heartbeat data: per-heartbeat statistics charts and the log entries reported with the latest heartbeat, with auto-refresh and relative last-reported times.
- Add a heartbeat service health
indicator to the navigation and
GET /api/heartbeat/health, which report why the heartbeat service is unhealthy, not only whether it responds. - Add bootstrap owner tokens:
provision an all-access token at startup with
OWNER_TOKENor--owner-tokenfor infrastructure-as-code workflows. The token is idempotent across restarts and rotates its predecessor when the value changes. - Transfer ownership from the web interface with a request that the target administrator accepts. The owner sends the request from the Users page and can cancel it while it is pending; the target sees a banner on every page and accepts or declines from their Account page, setting a recovery password when their account has no local one. Audit logging records each step. See Transfer ownership.
- Sign audit entries with a configured key and verify the chain
(Telegraf Enterprise): each entry records the fingerprint of the key that
signed it, Telegraf Controller verifies the current month’s chain at
startup, and
GET /api/audit-logger/verifychecks every retained monthly file on demand. See Verify integrity. - Include log entries in the default heartbeat output template.
New configurations ship with
"logs"in the plugin’sincludelist and a limit of 50 entries per heartbeat. See Include logs with heartbeats. - Report an agent’s real IP address from behind a proxy with the
Telegraf-Agent-IPheartbeat header. See Report the agent IP address from behind a proxy. - Publish Telegraf Controller as a Docker image on Docker Hub
(
influxdata/telegraf-controller). The image is built for both x86-64 and ARM64, so it runs on Intel, AMD, and ARM hosts, including Apple silicon. See Run Telegraf Controller in Docker. - Ship a signed SHA-256 digests file with every release so you can verify downloaded binaries.
- Add plugin support to the Telegraf Builder UI:
- Google Cloud Secret Manager (
secretstores.googlecloud)
- Google Cloud Secret Manager (
Bug fixes
- Stop SQLite database corruption under concurrent agent heartbeats and API or web interface use. The heartbeat service now shares one SQLite library with the rest of Telegraf Controller instead of linking its own.
- Enforce the agent limit across a whole high-availability cluster instead of per node, and free an agent’s slot as soon as it is deleted instead of at the next restart.
- Keep status checks working with reporting rules of about 25 days or more on PostgreSQL. Previously, one such rule stopped every status check with an integer overflow, so no agent was marked Not Reporting or auto-deleted.
- Reject reporting rule thresholds of zero, negative, or fractional seconds, and ignore rules already stored with a non-positive threshold, which marked live agents Not Reporting or deleted them.
- Keep exactly one default reporting rule. Turning Default Rule off on the default rule now returns an error instead of leaving new agents without a rule, and making another rule the default moves the flag in one step.
- Enforce unique configuration and configuration group names and keep
generated names, such as duplicates, within 255 characters. Previously, an
overlong generated name broke the configuration list with a
500response. - Limit API tokens to their own permissions: a wildcard such as
*:*orlicense:*now expands to the permissions the role holds, tokens cannot manage other users’ tokens, and the former owner’s tokens are re-clamped after an ownership transfer. - Forward sign-in, sign-out, constant, and agent-deletion audit events to syslog, webhook, and file destinations like every other event, write nothing while audit logging is disabled, and keep running when a forwarder fails. Previously, disabling audit logging with a syslog forwarder configured could stop the process.
- Stop one malformed heartbeat from dropping the rest of its batch: reject
control characters in
hostnameandversionwith400, accept an agent that references the same configuration by ID and by alias, and skip an oversized log entry instead of discarding all entries. - Write every acknowledged heartbeat to the database before shutting down.
- Reject sign-in
returnTovalues that resolve to another origin. - Show an error on the Agents page when the list fails to load instead of reporting that there are no agents.
- Flush heartbeat statistics every 5 seconds instead of every 60, so agent detail pages update sooner.
- Document date fields, read-only arrays, and nullable values correctly in
the OpenAPI document, and align the
GET /api/agentsquery parameters with what the API accepts. - Keep the caret in place while editing the agent search text.
- Build invite links and password reset links from the User Interface URL public endpoint, falling back to the browser’s address, instead of the API host.
v1.1.2
Heartbeat requests now require Heartbeat write permission
Starting in v1.1.2, Telegraf Controller rejects heartbeat requests that use an API token without write permission on the Heartbeat resource, or a token owned by a disabled user. Before you upgrade, confirm that the tokens your agents send with heartbeats include Heartbeat write permission. See Use API tokens.
Features
- Download the OpenAPI document for the Telegraf Controller API as JSON or
YAML from
/api/docs/openapi.jsonand/api/docs/openapi.yaml, and use it with code generators and API tools. See Download the OpenAPI document. - Allow underscores (
_) and periods (.) in configuration aliases. Aliases must still begin and end with a letter or digit. - Add plugin support to the Telegraf Builder UI:
- PostgreSQL Extensible (
inputs.postgresql_extensible) - PowerDNS (
inputs.powerdns) - PowerDNS Recursor (

- PostgreSQL Extensible (
Bug fixes
- Enforce API token permissions on heartbeat requests. The heartbeat endpoint
now rejects a token without Heartbeat write permission with a
403response and rejects tokens owned by disabled users. Previously, it accepted any unrevoked, unexpired token. The heartbeat token cache also refreshes when a user is disabled, re-enabled, or deleted, and when a user’s role changes. - Load the number of configurations shown per page by default on the configurations list.
- Limit the select-all control on the configurations list to its checkbox and label.
- Stop the unsaved-changes warning from appearing when you type in the Telegraf Builder plugin search.
- Align the Processes input plugin (
inputs.processes) in the Telegraf Builder with Telegraf: correct the use_sudo toggle label and remove parser options the plugin doesn’t support.
v1.1.1
Features
- Assign aliases while creating a
configuration or a configuration group, in the web interface and through
the
POST /api/configsandPOST /api/config-groupsAPI endpoints. If a requested alias is already assigned, Telegraf Controller rejects the request and identifies the alias’s current owner. - Add TLS client and TLS server settings to 70 plugins in the Telegraf Builder, including plugins that previously had no TLS options.
- Describe every request, response, and error in the interactive API reference.
- Add plugin support to the Telegraf Builder UI:
- Nomad (
inputs.nomad) - NSD (

Bug fixes
- Show configuration groups in the Managed Configurations list on agent detail pages.
- Parse common plugin fields, including
alias,interval,name_override,tags, and metric filters, when the Telegraf Builder imports the ActiveMQ, Aurora, Beat, Burrow, ClickHouse, Couchbase, DC/OS, and Jenkins input plugins. Previously, the builder dropped these fields. - Keep API request and response schemas in the interactive API reference when running Telegraf Controller as a packaged binary.
- Align label chips with the plugin count chip on the configurations list.
v1.1.0
Features
- Add high availability (Telegraf Enterprise): run multiple Telegraf Controller nodes against a shared PostgreSQL database with automatic leader election, failover, and load-balancer health endpoints.
- Add configuration versioning: Telegraf Controller records a version each time a configuration’s content changes. View version history, attach change notes, compare two versions, roll back to a previous version, and prune versions you no longer need.
- Add configuration aliases:
human-readable names that agents and users can use in place of
configuration IDs, including short
/c/URLs. Transfer an alias to repoint agents to a different configuration without changing agent commands. - Add global constants: define a
value once and reference it across configurations with the
::{constant_name}syntax. Telegraf Controller substitutes constants server-side when serving a configuration. - Add configuration groups: bundle multiple configurations into an ordered group that agents retrieve as a single merged TOML document. Groups compose by reference, support their own aliases and labels, and include a merged TOML preview and the agent command builder. Agent detail pages link reporting agents to the configuration groups they use.
- Add a nested Configurations menu to the navigation with Configs, Config Groups, and Constants entries.
- Add focus mode to expand the configuration editing area to fill the browser window.
- Warn before navigating away from unsaved changes on configuration and configuration group pages.
- Rename the Dynamic Configuration Values panel to Substitute Configuration Values and add Telegraf secret syntax highlighting in the Code Editor. See Substitute values in configurations.
- Add plugin support to the Telegraf Builder UI:
- InfluxDB v3 (
outputs.influxdb_v3) - Network Response (
inputs.net_response) - NetFlow (
inputs.netflow) - NFS Client (
inputs.nfsclient) - nftables (
inputs.nftables) - Nginx Plus (

inputs.nginx_plus_api) - Nginx STS (
inputs.nginx_sts) - Nginx Upstream Check (
inputs.nginx_upstream_check) - Nginx VTS (
inputs.nginx_vts)
- InfluxDB v3 (
Bug fixes
- Make agent last-reported timestamps monotonic and read them from the database clock, preventing out-of-order timestamps between nodes.
- Run each agent status evaluation tick in a transaction, and continue status evaluation even if an audit log entry can’t be written.
- Apply each database migration in a transaction and fail startup on migration errors instead of silently recording a failed migration as applied.
- Make enabling audit logging idempotent.
- Keep audit logging active during the Telegraf Enterprise license grace period, matching the behavior of other Telegraf Enterprise features.
- Point TOML parse error locations at the correct position in the document in the Code Editor.
- Clean up list styling on the configurations, labels, and reporting rules pages.
v1.0.2
Features
- Add plugin support to the Telegraf Builder UI:
- MQTT Consumer (
inputs.mqtt_consumer) - Multifile (
inputs.multifile) - MySQL (
inputs.mysql) - NATS Server Monitoring (
inputs.nats) - NATS Consumer (
inputs.nats_consumer) - Neoom Beaam (
inputs.neoom_beaam) - Neptune Apex (
inputs.neptune_apex) - Apache Zookeeper (
inputs.zookeeper)
- MQTT Consumer (
Bug fixes
- Fix agent list filters, page reset when filters change, and a pagination off-by-one error.
- Fix filtering agents by the Undefined status and pagination when a filter returns no results.
- No longer require a reporting rule’s auto-delete threshold to be longer than its not-reporting threshold, and clarify the auto-delete field help text.
- Store agent timestamps consistently between the heartbeat service and the API, fixing unreliable not-reporting status checks, incorrect sorting and filtering by last-reported time, and a time zone offset on PostgreSQL servers not set to UTC.
- Fix the elapsed time display when an agent’s last report is momentarily in the future.
v1.0.1
Features
- Serve the web UI on a separate port from the API using the
UI_PORToption, for deployments that run the web UI behind a reverse proxy. - When serving the web UI on a separate port, configure the API URL and the
allowed CORS origins with the
PUBLIC_API_URL,PUBLIC_API_PORT,PUBLIC_UI_URL, andPUBLIC_UI_PORToptions for reverse-proxy and remapped-port deployments. - Sort the agent list by column (Agent Details, Status, Last Reported), backed
by
sortByandsortOrderquery parameters onGET /api/agents. - Accept both
postgresql://andpostgres://connection string schemes and tolerate quotedDATABASE_URLvalues. - Accept command-line flags in both
--flag valueand--flag=valueforms and validate port options at startup.
Bug fixes
- Sync the agents quota counter with manual refresh and polling.
- Fix an environment-variable example typo on the add-configuration page.

v0.0.7-beta
Breaking change: Only allow endpoint authorization control on startup
The disabledAuthEndpoints setting has been removed from the API and Settings
UI. Authentication bypass is now controlled exclusively via the
DISABLED_AUTH_ENDPOINTS environment variable or the
--disable-auth-endpoints command line flag, read once at startup and
immutable at runtime.
Why: Runtime-configurable authentication bypass was a security weakness. Anyone with admin access to the UI or API or direct access to the underlying database could disable authentication on critical endpoints without restarting the service or leaving an infrastructure-level audit trail. Auth policy now belongs to whoever deploys the service, not whoever logs into it.
Action required: By default, authentication is required on all endpoints.
If you previously relied on the old * default or disabled specific endpoints
via the UI, set DISABLED_AUTH_ENDPOINTS in your deployment environment
before upgrading.

v0.0.5-beta
Important changes
This release introduces user and account management, API token authentication, and configurable authentication options. By default, authentication is required to interact with all API endpoints. If you have agents reading configurations from and reporting heartbeats to Telegraf Controller, they will begin to fail with authorization errors.
To avoid agent authorization errors:
Temporarily disable authentication on the Heartbeat and Configs APIs. You can use either the
--disable-auth-endpointscommand flag or theDISABLED_AUTH_ENDPOINTSenvironment variable when starting Telegraf Controller.telegraf_controller --disable-auth-endpoints=configs,heartbeatexport DISABLED_AUTH_ENDPOINTS="configs,heartbeat" telegraf_controller --disable-auth-endpoints=configs,heartbeatCreate an API token with read permissions on the Configs API and write permissions on the Heartbeat API.
Use the
INFLUX_TOKENenvironment variable to define thetokenoption in your heartbeat output plugin configuration:[[outputs.heartbeat]] # ... token = "${INFLUX_TOKEN}"Define the
INFLUX_TOKENenvironment variable in your Telegraf environment:export INFLUX_TOKEN=YOUR_TELEGRAF_CONTROLLER_TOKENtelegraf --config "https://localhost:8888/api/configs/..."Replace
YOUR_TELEGRAF_CONTROLLER_TOKENwith your Telegraf Controller API token. It’s important to use the
INFLUX_TOKENenvironment variable. When present, Telegraf uses this specific variable to set the token used in theAuthorizationheader when requesting the configuration.Navigate to the Settings page in Telegraf Controller and reenable authentication on the Configs and Heartbeat APIs. Save your changes.
